Skins game in golf

Skins games is a golf game or unofficial-money event on the PGA Tour or friendly competitions among amateurs  where usually played between three or four Golfers. Each hole is played separately, and is won by the player with the lowest score on the hole  that golfer wins ‘the skin’. The interesting part of the game happens when two or more players tie for the low score. If there is any kind of tie for first place, then no one wins the hole (it’s call One Tie, All Tie).

What is a skins game in golf?

It’s about the most basic form of golf gambling there is, and a format popular from a member-guest from the white tees all the way to the practice rounds at Augusta National during The Masters.

If your team wins a hole, you get a “skin” for victory on that hole. But if your team ties any other participant in the match for the lowest score on a hole, that money rolls over to the next hole. So if there’s a tie, the next hole is worth double. And if that hole is tied? The following is three skins, or triple the original amount.

The old Skins Game broadcasts on Thanksgiving weekend on ABC from 1983-2008 for what was huge prize money at the time helped to popularize the format. But those broadcasts increased the amount of money available every six holes. The last year of that event saw the first six holes worth $25,000, holes 7-12 $50,000, and holes 13-17 at $70,000. The 18th was worth a whopping $200,000.

How to Play a Golf Skins Game?

Between three or four Golfers, Each golfer hits his own ball throughout the round but after each hole scores are compared. If one of the scores is lower than all others for that hole then that golfer is awarded 1 skin and the golfers proceed likewise to the next hole until the end of the round. In case of a tie, no skin is awarded for that hole and again the players proceed to the next hole. The unclaimed skin however is carried over to the next hole, whose value rises by 1 to become worth 2 skins and so on. Since there are 18 holes to play there are 18 skins up for grabs.

How do you play skins in golf with a handicap?

A handicap is designed to provide assistance on those holes where the less skilled player needs it most. If you were to use a full course handicap for all players, the less skilled players wouldn’t be getting any help on the holes that they really need it.

skins is for players of equal handicaps.  handicaps do not work well either full, or played off low hcp. playing off low hcp player gives all strokes between low and all other players correctly. But the differential between all others is allocated incorrectly. resulting in lower hcp players not giving higher hcp players strokes on the hardest holes deferring them to easier holes.

example: 7, 14  & 21 hcp players. 14 gets strokes on 1-7(7 strokes), 21 gets strokes 1-14 (14 strokes). Since both 14 and 21 get strokes on holes 1-7 they cancel each other and hcp advantage doesn’t show up until holes 8-14. with more players this snowballs to lower hcp players mostly playing scratch against higher hcps on the hardest holes, while higher players see distinct advantages on easiest holes. players in the middle range get penalize at both ends hard holes against low hcps and easy holes against higher hcps.
